Whether you’re returning to your roots or learning something new, Creole Culture Day offers an open invitation to experience the people, practices, and language that continue to shape our communities. Bring your family, your appetite, and your curiosity.
Creole Culture
(Begins at 6:30 AM)
The day begins early with a live boucherie—a hands-on, communal hog butchering and cooking tradition that has fed our families for generations. This year, two families featured in our upcoming film The Old Way Still Cuts: A Creole Boucherie will lead the demonstration. Food preparations such as cracklin, boudin, and meats from the pit will be served free to the public, with cooking demonstrations offered in English and Kouri-Vini.
Award-winning historian and journalist Ja’el “Yaya” Gordon will serve as this year’s keynote, guiding guests through the process of tracing their Creole roots. With on-site genealogy support, participants can explore personal histories and the deep interwoven lineages of African, Indigenous, and French ancestry in Louisiana.
Our language lives here. Throughout the day, guests are invited to participate in activities centered on Creole French, including Creole Bingo, basic conversation practice, and storytelling moments that highlight the importance of preserving Kouri-Vini for future generations.
A curated lineup of Creole food vendors and cultural artisans will offer everything from traditional dishes to handmade crafts. Come hungry, leave inspired—this is a chance to taste and support the legacy of Creole cooking and creativity.
The sounds of Creole Louisiana will fill the air all day long. A full music and DJ lineup will be announced soon, featuring artists who carry the rhythms of our culture forward with soul, swing, and plenty of foot-stomping energy.
